A Coaching Lesson About Helicopter Parenting

Parenting is hard...

In 2021, one child left our home, off to college, and one teenager remained. The one who remained had been driving me crazy. It wasn't until a coaching session that I realized the problem wasn't them, it was me.

I came to the conclusion, I was over-parenting.

I was taking all of the energy of parenting two children and putting it towards the one that remained at home. That wasn't fair to them or to me. It wasn't healthy for our relationship and it's not what I wanted for either of us.

I wonder where our relationship would be today had I not realized this through the gift of coaching. Now, our relationship has never been better.

Instead of visiting with a friend and complaining about my child, which would have served no purpose, I raised the issue of the relationship with my child with someone who was coaching me in a coaching class. They asked me some powerful questions. They didn't solve the problem for me, they helped me identify it and I was able to solve it.

Where, in your life, may you benefit from working with a coach? What's at stake, and are you willing to keep paying the price?
