Second in my Letterman-style Top 10 list of "Reasons Why Starting a Business is Like Starting a Family"—you might spend a good amount of money, but everything's an investment in your future.
When both of my kids were young, I read to them. At the time, I wondered what I was doing, because I knew they didn't understand the words I was saying. But the way I looked at it, I was making deposits in the "bank." We were growing our emotional bond, and the payoff later was worth it.
When I first began my business, I wasn't thinking about investments. I had a scarcity mindset. I didn't have a ton of money to work with, and to preserve what I had, I did a LOT of things myself. And that worked, for some of the tasks. But for many of them, I found that I was spending way too much time and brainspace on things that weren't in my Zone of Genius. And every bit of time I was devoting to something else was taking away from the value I was capable of generating.
Now, I'm not advocating that you go out and spend a bunch of money you don't have. And, I also know it's a mindset shift to invest in yourself and your business. However, partnering with other small business owners with the excellence and expertise means your business has a chance to shine a whole lot brighter. And, you meet some amazing human beings who care about your business as much as you do.
