Why You Shouldn't Think About Replacing Your Founder

Updated: Mar 3, 2023

We've seen it played out before. A beloved founder decides it's time to retire.

There’s plenty of advice we could give for this scenario (and we will — stay tuned!) but for now, we’ll keep it simple.

When a founder is exiting their company, there’s usually a mad dash to find someone to replace them and take over their role within the organization. It becomes a situation where the Board or Executive Leadership wants to mitigate bumps in the road as much as possible, so they focus on hiring someone to fill the founder’s shoes.

We understand that when an owner or founder makes this decision, you could have all the time in the world and feel like you still don’t have the time you need to make the best decision. But we’re suggesting that instead of trying to find someone to take their place, you consider what is needed in a leader for the business to succeed moving forward into a new era — and hire from that place.

A founder’s departure is bittersweet, to be sure. It’s the end of an era — but it’s also the beginning of a new, exciting one. Take the time to put your organization in the best position possible for the next step.
