So, you’ve determined that working with a coach is something you’re interested in, and you’re looking to pursue it further. However, there are a TON of coaches out there. How do you know that you’re selecting the right one, whether you’re hoping to work with them in a professional or personal capacity?
As you might have guessed, I’ve got some thoughts. Here are some things to keep in mind as you’re narrowing down and selecting the coach you’d like to work with:
1. People are naturally creative, resourceful, and whole — and we all have an innate ability to navigate life. A good coach will help bring out these qualities in yourself, not just solve the problem for you. Look for someone who can help you harness the things that are already good about you!
2. Ask people you know and trust about coaching. Whom did they work with? What were their experiences? What questions did they ask their coach before diving in?
3. Coaching is an investment, and there’s a degree of comfort you’ll want to have when you work with someone. Don’t be afraid to ask for a “meet and greet” or a “chemistry session” with a coach to see if it’s a good fit.
4. Be ready to invest in yourself—not just with money, but with time and reflection. You don’t need to know what you want to explore—a good coach will guide you—but coaching works best when you set aside the time and space on your side.
5. Training and certifications matter. Find out about which training and certifications your coach has been through, and how that contributes to how they practice.
Anyone else that’s used a coach — what else would you add? And to my fellow coaches — any other suggestions?
