Drip, drip, drip...
At first you don't notice.
Drip - a side comment, a joke at your expense, an unreasonable (and impossible request)....
Drip - a whisper in your boss' ear, talking over you in a meeting, telling you that you need to do more of 'this' and less of that (even though you don't report to them and you didn't ask)....
Drip - not inviting you to a meeting you should be at, actively campaigning against you....
And at first, you don't notice it, but over time, you can see a pattern.
These are things that insecure people do. These are things that people with personal agendas do (that usually have zero to do with what's best for the company or people there).
So long as you are serving their agenda, things are great. But the second you start to figure out what they're doing (drip, drip, drip), watch out!
I have found (most of the time), if someone is trying to direct your attention to someone else, that typically means they are redirecting you so that you don't notice their poor performance.
Leaders, take note.
These are toxic people. You need to decide if that aligns with your values and culture. It's also how you lose good people.
