Coaching Through the Mental Clutter

Updated: Jan 2

When I was helping my daughter move into her condo earlier this year, I was reminded of how tough it is for us to get rid of the things that no longer serve us and how to organize what remains—and how easy it is when the “stuff” belongs to someone else.

Of course, part of it is that my daughter is young, and hasn’t accrued the amount of stuff that comes with decades of living (and changes in tastes in art and furniture!). The other part is that while I love my daughter, I don’t have the attachment to her possessions that she does. I don’t relate to them in the same way, so it’s easier for me to make sense of them and see where the clutter is.

In a way, that’s what executive coaching is like. In my work with leaders, I see first-hand the mental clutter that persists, and how draining it can be. You’re out of ideas. You’re not sure of your next step. You’re not sure how to get out of the details and into the strategy.

That’s exactly what a coach can help with. Because it isn’t my clutter, I can work with you to organize it. We can tackle that beast of a junk drawer or closet together.
